Video: Police helicopter shot down by drug gangs

A recent gun fight between drug dealers in the slums of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil ended with the deaths of two police officers and the fiery crash of a law enforcement helicopter.

The helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing in the Morro dos Mocacos favela of Rio when it burst into flames.

Two other policemen and the pilot were able to escape. What ensued was a fierce battle between more than 100 police officers and the drug gangs as local law enforcement struggled to gain control of the area around the crash and keep the violence from spreading to areas frequented by tourists. At least seven more people were dead and many more injured when the smoke cleared.

Rio has more than 1,000 favelas or shantytowns and has long been the epicenter of violence among organized crime gangs fighting for control of drug business in Brazil. More than six thousand people are killed every year in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and one thousand of the annual deaths are caused by police.
