The "Semi-Blonde" Latina Issue ...

Now that semi-nude photos of
Adrienne Bailon are gracing the desktops of creepy dudes everywhere, it's probably a good idea for the star to lay low until this unfortunate scandal clears. Too bad she did an interview just days before the pics surfaced! In an article published today, Bailon chats it up with the New York Daily News about her current tour with
The Cheetah Girls (again, not a great way to dodge the critics) and talks about the latest news in her personal and professional life, clearly unaware of the drama that's about to unfold.
Her first juicy tidbit? “I am working on my solo album, which is going to be R&B, hip hop, and has a Latin flair to it," says Bailon. Ok, that sounds a bit generic--but still, we're excited to hear any new music by a Latina. What else is new, Adrienne? “I also dyed my hair from blond to dark brown because I’m trying to look more Latina,” she says.
Awes--wait, huh? “I’m not a natural blond, and I want to go back to my roots, to the way God intended me to be," adds the singer. Hmm...we see where Adrienne's going with this, but is she suggesting that only naturally brunette Latinas are "authentic?" We do come in all shapes, sizes and hair colors, and we should be able to dye our locks just like other chicas! Right?
Perhaps Adrienne was getting flack from her peers for "selling out," which is a delicate issue in and of itself. But we think all Latinas should feel secure enough to play with clothes, makeup and hairstyles without fear of being pigeonholed.
What do you think, chicas? Can you relate to Adrienne's sensitivity over the faux-blonde Latina issue?
