After not-so-subtly denouncing him as an "emotional retard" on stage at her concert in Boston, Madonna is drawing even closer to her friend-with-multiple-benefits Alex Rodriguez.

"There are many issues," behind the break-up, a source tells People. "And not the least is her strange relationship with Alex Rodriguez. It is spiritual, emotional and romantic."

After meeting Alex through her cubanita gal pal Ingrid Casares, Madonna introduced A-Rod to Kabbalah last year. Alex's draw to the mystical Jewish religion and his often-inappropriate late night visits to Madonna's New York penthouse were some of the things that led to his divorce from Cynthia Rodriguez in July.

"There is no question that Madonna's relationship with Alex was a big factor in Cynthia and Alex's decision to go ahead with the divorce," says the source, adding that the marriage "was way beyond repair.

"After a very public scandal and two bitter divorces, it's Kabbalah that keeps Madonna's and A-Rod's relationship strong. The source close to all involved reveals, "when you want to understand A-Rod and Cynthia's problems—and Madonna and A-Rod's relationship—don't overlook the impact of Kabbalah."

Alex's rep has no comment on any of the above. Frankly, we don't blame him. We're pretty speechless over this ourselves.
