An hour or two of reality TV never killed anyone (I think). Granted, everyone can always find better things to do, but we are all entitled to a little guilty pleasure every now and then. No big deal. Right?
However, this new obsession with reality shows and its stars is getting way out of hand now. There is something seriously wrong with a generation that features the latest on "Speidi" as major breaking news.
Turn on any entertainment show or flip the pages of any celebrity magazine and surely you will find at least one article or segment mentioning "The Hills" and the stupid drama that surrounds this supposed "reality" show.
Sadly, though, the media is just offering the public what it craves - mind numbing gossip on pointless celebrities who contribute nothing to this world.
I won't even get into Paris Hilton.
Some of the other reality shows that have hit the scene and produced their very own celebrities, such as "Shot at Love with Tila Tequila" and "Flavor of Love" are a complete disgrace. The future of entertainment is definitely looking bleak.
And "Viva Hollywood"? What were you thinking, Maria? You couldn't possibly have been that desperate for work. Great way to contribute to the stereotypes regarding Hispanics. Bravo! We have never been portrayed in such a positive light. Thank you.
But nothing can possibly be worse than Lifetime's attempt at reality programming. There is something extremely sick about parent and offspring performing dance routines that appear to be straight out of "Dirty Dancing".
"Your Mama Don't Dance" should have been banned.
For every single terrible reality show that we make hugely successful, we have 20 others polluting our television screens.
One has to grow concerned about the current trend among younger generations (and sometimes older) and their abnormal obsession with celebrity to the point where they turn reality idiots into stars.
If garbage is hitting the airwaves and we agree to embrace it as part of our culture, then it is time to begin asking some serious questions about where we are headed as a whole.
After all, the media is simply responding to the desires of the general public. And only we have the power to change that.
