Oscar de la Renta Criticizes Michelle Obama's Fashion Choice

For the past 30 years he has dressed every First Lady - except Michelle Obama, and he remains unimpressed with her fashion sense.

At a recent state dinner for Chinese president Hu Jintao, First Lady Michelle Obama wore a beautiful red and black dress by Alexander McQueen. But her choice of designer raised a few eyebrows.

The dress was red, symbolizing happiness and prosperity in Chinese culture. Which seems like a smart choice.

But according to Women Wear Daily article, designer De la Renta stated, "My understanding is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade." "Why do you wear European clothes?"

"I'm not talking about my clothes, my business. I'm old, and I don't need it. But there are a lot of young people, very talented people here who do."

"I don't object to the fact that Mrs. Obama is wearing J. Crew because the diversity of America is what makes this country great. But there are a lot of great designers out there. I think it's wrong to go in one direction only."

The iconic fashion designer expressed that, "You don't...go to Buckingham Palace in a sweater," knocking Obama's widely praised ensemble.
