Mel Gibson and his girlfriend welcome a baby girl

Mel Gibson and his girlfriend are welcoming the birth of the couple's first child - making the Oscar-winner a father for the eighth time.

Gibson's publicist Alan Nierob said Monday that Oksana Grigorieva gave birth to a baby girl named Lucia on Friday at a hospital in Los Angeles. No further details were available.

The Australian-raised actor already has seven children from his first wife Robyn who filed for divorce in April this year after 28 years of marriage; she cited irreconcilable differences in her petition. Grigorieva has a teenage son with former James Bond actor Timothy Dalton. Gibson has said that he and his wife split up three years ago, shortly after he was arrested in Malibu for drunken driving and launched into an alcohol-fueled tirade against Jews. He later apologized and sought treatment for alcoholism.

The 53-year-old "Braveheart" star met Grigorieva, a 39-year-old Russian musician, while filming "Edge of Reason."
