Not exactly, but apparently writers were considering a lesbian storyline for the show.

According to reports, the show’s writers were proposing a romantic relationship between Judith Light (‘Claire Meade’) and Christine Baranski’s (‘Victoria Hartley,’ a.k.a. the mom of Betty’s new love interest, ‘Matt’) characters.

During a recent interview with the New York Daily News, cast member Vanessa Williams reportedly said, ‘[ABC] put the kibosh on it…I don’t know why.’

This isn’t the first time a gay storyline has been scrapped by ABC. Just a few months ago, the network asked Grey’s Anatomy producers to drop a lesbian storyline between actresses Sara Ramirez and Brooke Smith, sources say. Apparently the network was scared of airing the plot on primetime.

Back then, Grey’s creator, Shondra Rhimes denied the rumors and reportedly said the ‘magic and chemistry with Brooke’s character’ wouldn’t ‘sustain in the long run.’ Shortly afterwards, Smith was let go from the show.

This time around, Ugly Betty’s executive producer, Silvio Horta, had more or less the same response regarding his storyline. When the Daily News asked Horta about the controversy he reportedly said, ‘We thought about it, but ultimately decided to go in a direction that would set up more stories for next season.’
