While Ximena Sariñana is Away, Omar Rodríguez-López Will Play

Just because his girlfriend, Mexican singer Ximena Sariñana, is busy touring around the country until May 3, doesn’t mean Puerto Rican prog rocker Omar Rodríguez-López is sitting in the couple’s home in Guadalajara twiddling his fingers.

The Mars Volta songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has a new project: El Grupo Nuevo de Omar Rodríguez-López. And come Cinco de Mayo, we’ll get to hear the first of three highly-anticipated albums the band produced in 2006. Titled Cryptomnesia (definition: “inadvertent plagiarism”), the record is being described as more aggressive than anything he’s done before.

Want a taste? The vinyl LP version was released on Monday in honor of Record Store Day, and the preview track, “Half Kleptos,” is available on Stereogum.com. So listen with an open mind, and if you need to take the edge off, alternate the chaotic sounds with Sariñana’s melodic songs on Mediocre.
