Wearing a gorgeous vintage white ballgown by Pierre Balmain, an emotional Cruz accepted her Oscar from a group of fabulous female stars and former Best Supporting Actress winners, including Tilda Swinton, Goldie Hawn and Whoopi Goldberg, and joked at the podium, "Has anybody ever fainted here? Because I might be the first one."

Cruz dedicated the award to her home country of Spain, but not before thanking Vicky Cristina Barcelona director Woody Allen "for trusting me with this beautiful character" and paying special tribute to Pedro Almodóvar, her longtime collaborator and the director of Volver, for which Cruz received a Best Actress Oscar nod in 2007: "I cannot talk about great female characters without thanking my friend, Pedro Almodóvar, for having made me a part of so many of his adventures."
